They just keep growing!

The chickens are 4 weeks old today. They are really starting to feather out and look like adult chickens. They’ll be in the brooder pen in the garage for another week or two and then we’ll move them out to the chicken coop. We’ve seperated the two meat birds from the rest because they need have their food intake restricted so they grow at the proper rate. If they were allowed, they would eat so much they might outgrow their hearts and die, and we certianly don’t want that!

The chicks have gotten quite rambuncious in their adolescence. They are able to fly short distances but without much control so they crash into the walls and light leaving wing marks in the dust. The brooder seems like its getting kind of small but they only have another week or so in here, luckily.

This shows the larger Cornish Roaster compared to one of the larger Buff Orpingtons at 4 weeks old. It really illustrates the power of selective breeding.

This spring weve developed a pond in the backyard. A pair of ducks have started to visit it which is pretty neat. I hope theyre not too disspaointed when it dries up in the summer.
